I am following up today in the Old Testament Book of Micah. That famous prophet who spoke one of the most popular Bible quotes:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8, ESV)
And, it seems to me that even people who do not profess to be Christian know, and sometime reference, this verse. But, today I moved into the last chapter of Micah and I found another gem of a verse:
“But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me. Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me. (Micah 7:7-8, ESV)
Okay, I know that it’s actually two verses here. Others may be focusing on verse seven, and it’s a really great verse, it speaks volumes about waiting on God, something that I’m not so good at. But, it was verse eight that flew off of the page to me. “… when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me.” Wow!
WHEN I fall.
I SHALL rise.
WHEN I sit in darkness.
GOD WILL BE my light.
There’s a great, wonderful, powerful promise in the last part of that little verse. I’m God’s child, I have His love, I have His promise. Yet, God has not promised that bad things won’t happen to me. I’m a flawed person living in this world with other flawed and fallen people. Bad things are going to happen to me that’s a given! I’ll live a life of peace, perfection, and completeness when I reach my eternal home in Heaven, after my time on earth is done.
In the meantime, when those bad things happen to me, when others cheat me, when others defame my name, when others betray me. When I do things wrong, when I hurt others. When I fall, WHEN, not if, when that happens, God promises that I shall – I read that as I WILL rise. As my favorite teaching pastor Brad Powell says: “Failure is not final!” I will rise again, the enemy CANNOT keep me down. I will rise, just as gloriously as a majestic eagle soars through the sky – I will rise.
When I sit in darkness, I will not be blind. I WILL see because I won’t be in that darkness alone. I won’t be in the dark at all, because God IS my LIGHT. “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5, ESV) Although the world will attempt to envelope me in darkness, confusion, and chaos – all supreme tactics of the enemy – my God is with me in the midst. All it takes is one little channel of light and the darkness is expelled. God is pure and God is love, and God is light. God is my LIGHT!
How about you? Will you rise?
