Back in the days when I had cable TV, I enjoyed watching HGTV. One of the shows I watched was called Decorating Cents. It’s where for 400 episodes the host, Joan Steffend, would make over a room for under $500. I liked her designs and ideas because they usually were so varied and fresh. She always had a segment in her show where she would find something that someone else got rid of, hence what someone found to be useless, and would transform it into something useful, or artistic – I think she called the segment from trash to treasure. Some of those ideas were ingenious, and I remember thinking wow, what a great idea, why didn’t I think of that? It seems to be ingrained in us to marvel over novel ideas, especially when these novel ideas appeal to our basic common sense.
I think that in our human nature we also long to go from useless to useful. And though I don’t think any of us want to be trash, most likely all of us want to be treasure. Inside each of us, there’s a great big hole that we long to fill up. And so many people try to fill up that hole with fame, money, attention, or vices like drinking, drugs, etc. And no matter what they try, they are still left with that great big empty hole deep inside. They feel unfulfilled, or perhaps useless.
There’s only one thing that can totally fill up that void, and that’s God. That’s because it’s a God-sized hole inside of each of us. And, until we enter into a relationship with Jesus, that hole will remain as a giant vacuum. No matter what else you try to pour into the vacuum, it will be sucked in and vacated out. Once you accept Jesus as your personal savior, God fills you with the Holy Spirit – God fills the entire emptiness. And for the first time, you feel full of God’s goodness, grace, and love. You’ve really gone from useless to useful, from trash to treasure.
It’s that simple. Let God’s forgiveness, goodness, grace, mercy, hope, and love redeem you into the treasure that He would have you become. Only He can save you and fulfill you. Only He can truly turn you into a reflection of Him. Shine His light and love through you, be the treasure that He made you to be.
